When SSN was created it specifically stated that it was not to be used for


other purposes. Folks in the thirties had clear ideas about the danger of creating an national ID number, eg necessary for totalitarian states. And a lot of those issues have come to bear fruit in all the Identity theft that's been going on. The US government failed on this.

One thing that would cure this is being able to issue a new SSN eg, the data goes stale eventually. that sorta happens now when they ask you lots of questions about your recent history that only you would know, it's info that gets refreshed so if it's getting stored in a DB somewhere it will eventually get stale. The SSN never does though.
